It's not every day that a pivotal sequel to one of the popular PC console games is indirectly unveiled by the US Federal Trade Commission. Yet, that's precisely what happened with the sequel to Bohemia Interactive's groundbreaking title, DayZ, aptly named DayZ 2. An unexpected turn of events in the form of the ongoing discovery process of the FTC's efforts to stall Microsoft's proposed $65 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard led to the confirmation of DayZ's development.

The revelation came hidden inside the trove of internal documents and emails of Microsoft's summary card on Bohemia Interactive. The documents, while summarising the game developer's history, highlighted DayZ's ongoing popularity, which offers a survivalist's playground for just under 35,000 concurrent players. Then, tucked away in additional information, it unceremoniously dropped the bombshell: "Dev working on ArmA Reforged, ArmA 4, and DayZ 2."

But simply confirmation of a sequel isn't enough to satiate the curiosity of millions of fans worldwide. A looming question is what direction Bohemia Interactive intends to take DayZ. Will they retain the slow-paced tension-filled experience that made it a cornerstone of the battle royale genre? Or will they take cues from competitors who have placed emphasis on accessibility, reduced match times, and dynamic traversal mechanics? At this point, it's all subject to speculation.

The document was also surprised by revealing Bohemia Interactive's reluctance towards the PC Game Pass, despite being comfortable with DayZ's console performance. This could be indicative of the developer's PC-centric approach or, perhaps, a shared apprehension among other game studios regarding Microsoft's future plans with the Game Pass. Although such speculation might be premature, it certainly adds another layer of complexity to the narrative.

In conclusion, the FTC's unintended reveal of DayZ 2 has certainly whipped up a storm of excitement and speculation among the gaming community. While we eagerly await further news, it's important to note that Bohemia Interactive still has ArmA 4 on its roster. Given the extensive time and effort required for such a project, DayZ 2 may still be some years down the line. Until then, all we can do is keep our fingers crossed and our gaming gear ready.
