Amazon has filed a legal objection against the European Union's stringent online content regulations, which includes it among a group of designated 'very large online platforms' (VLOP). This move, a first by a Big Tech company, comes two weeks after German online retailer Zalando lodged a similar lawsuit against the European Commission. Tech experts predict that this challenge could pave the way for other tech giants to follow suit.

The challenge was filed in the Luxembourg-based General Court, Europe's second highest. Amazon's objection revolves around the Digital Services Act (DSA), put into effect last year, which bestowed the VLOP tag on 19 online platforms and search engines with over 45 million users. This designation requires companies to make a more intensive effort to combat illicit online content.

An Amazon spokesperson stated, "If the VLOP designation were to be applied to Amazon and not to other large retailers across the EU, Amazon would be unfairly singled out and forced to meet onerous administrative obligations that don't benefit EU consumers." The company also insisted that it is not the largest retailer in any of the EU countries it operates in, and that its larger competitors in these countries have not received the same designation.

"Amazon doesn't fit this description of a 'Very Large Online Platform' under the DSA and therefore should not be designated as such," the spokesperson further asserted. Consequently, Amazon has requested the General Court to revoke its VLOP designation. As of now, the EU executive has not responded to this development or provided any comment.
