GTA 5 Map & Economy: The Stock Market Route to $2 Billion
Single player contains a working economy most players never open. Here is the full assassination and stock sequence, the one timing decision that decides whether it is worth millions or billions, which properties actually pay back, and what every collectible set really gives you.

The answer, in one line
Do not play Lester's four optional assassinations when they unlock. Save them until after The Big Score, when each protagonist is holding up to $40,000,000 — the returns are percentages, so the payoff scales with the capital you hold.
Played in that order the documented total is about $2,000,000,000 per protagonist, which is where the game's signed 32-bit money counter caps out. The full sequence → · What property actually pays back →
Two stock markets, and only one you can steer
| LCN — lcn-exchange.com | BAWSAQ — bawsaq.com | |
|---|---|---|
| Driven by | Events and missions on your own save | Aggregate behaviour of all players on your platform |
| Needs a connection | No | Yes — served through Rockstar's online service |
| Can you influence it | Yes, through story missions | Not personally |
| Listings | 47+ companies | Varies by platform |
| Refresh | Roughly every 45 seconds while trading | — |
Neither exists in GTA Online. There is no stock trading in the online game, despite BAWSAQ depending on online services. This is single player only, start to finish.
Is BAWSAQ still working?
Honestly: unreliably, and it always has been. Long before anything changed, the wiki documented that “for unknown reasons the BAWSAQ market is unavailable to some players and available to others at seemingly random times”, usually resolving within four to eight hours.
Rockstar Games Social Club's consumer site was folded away in July 2025. No source we could find confirms that BAWSAQ was permanently removed on any platform — the change is described as a rebrand toward Rockstar Games ID rather than a shutdown. Plan for it being unavailable when you need it, and know that a complete LCN-only route exists as a fallback.
One more thing worth knowing before you trade: the LCN website's own graphs “can be wildly inaccurate” compared with the actual price movement. Watch your portfolio's return percentage, not the chart.
Back to the GTA V guides hubLester's assassinations: the whole sequence
Five missions. Only the first is story-mandatory. Each one moves specific shares in a documented, repeatable direction — buy before, sell after.
| # | Mission | Buy before | Return | Buy after | Return |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Hotel mandatory | Betta Pharmaceuticals · BAWSAQ | ~80% | Bilkinton · LCN | ~80% |
| 2 | The Multi Target | Debonaire · LCN | ~80% | Redwood · LCN | ~320% |
| 3 | The Vice | Fruit · BAWSAQ | ~50% | Facade · BAWSAQ | ~33% |
| 4 | The Bus | — | — | Vapid · BAWSAQ | ~100% |
| 5 | The Construction | GoldCoast · LCN | 80–90% | — | — |
The timing decision the game never explains
Do not play assassinations 2 to 5 when they unlock. Save them until after The Big Score, when each protagonist is holding up to $40,000,000. The returns are percentages, so the payoff scales directly with the capital you hold. Running the roughly 320% Redwood play with a few hundred thousand dollars wastes the single largest multiplier in single player, permanently, on that save.
Documented running total, per protagonist
- After The Multi Target — about $330,000,000
- After The Vice — over $650,000,000
- After The Bus — over $1,300,000,000
- After The Construction — about $2,000,000,000
The ceiling is not an editorial estimate. The money counter is a signed 32-bit integer, so it caps at $2,147,483,647 per character. Invest with all three protagonists on every play and you reach roughly $6 billion across the save, which is as much money as the game can hold.
Two honest caveats about those percentages
They are not guaranteed. Peak returns vary between releases, platforms and individual market states — GTABase itself notes Betta returns about 80% on old-gen but only 21% on next-gen. Do not treat a percentage from any guide as an automatic sell signal. Watch your own return figure and sell when it stops climbing.
Sources also disagree on the Construction play: about 90% (GTABase) versus 80% (GTA BOOM). Quick-save before each mission and each investment, sleep at a safehouse to advance days, and reload if you overshoot the peak.
Property: what pays back and what is a trophy
| Business | Price | Per in-game week | Payback | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smoke on the Water | $204,000 | $9,300 | ~22 weeks | Best passive buy |
| Doppler Cinema | $10,000,000 | $132,200 | ~76 weeks | Good for its tier |
| Ten Cent Theater | $20,000,000 | $264,000 | ~76 weeks | Good for its tier |
| Pitchers | $750,000 | $7,100 | ~106 weeks | Slow |
| Tequi-la-la | $2,000,000 | $16,500 | ~121 weeks | Slow |
| Hookies | $600,000 | $4,700 | ~128 weeks | Slow |
| Tivoli Cinema | $30,000,000 | $142,300 | ~211 weeks | Worse than the $20M cinema |
| Los Santos Customs | $349,000 | $1,600 | ~218 weeks | Buy it for free customisation, not income |
| Los Santos Golf Club | $150,000,000 | $264,500 | ~567 weeks | Worst purchase in the game |
Expensive does not mean better
The $30,000,000 Tivoli Cinema pays back in about 211 weeks. The $20,000,000 Ten Cent Theater pays back in about 76. You pay fifty percent more for a property that takes nearly three times as long to return. And the Golf Club at $150,000,000 needs roughly 3,175 real hours of play to break even — more than a year of full-time playing. These are status purchases, and the game does nothing to tell you so.
The ones that actually pay for themselves fast
- McKenzie Field Hangar — $150,000, Trevor only. $7,000 per air smuggling run, $5,000 by ground. Breaks even in roughly four hours of active play
- Sonar Collections Dock — $250,000. $23,000 per nuclear waste barrel, thirty barrels in the game. Roughly $690,000 back for about two hours of diving
- LSPD Auto Impound — $150,000, up to $500 per towed car
Two rules the interface never states: only the character who makes the purchase receives the income, and businesses pay into that character's account every seven in-game days. Buying everything costs almost $220,000,000 in total, which is achievable only after the stock market sequence above.
Back to the GTA V guides hubEvery collectible set, and what it actually gives you
| Set | Count | Reward | Required for 100% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spaceship Parts | 50 | Unlocks The Final Frontier → Space Docker | Indirectly — that mission is one of the 20 |
| Letter Scraps | 50 | Unlocks A Starlet in Vinewood | Indirectly — same reason |
| Stunt Jumps | 50 | Trophy for all 50. No cash, no vehicle | 25 of 50 |
| Under the Bridge | 50 | Trophy with all Knife Flights | 25 of 50 |
| Knife Flights | 15 | Same trophy | 8 of 15 |
| Nuclear Waste | 30 | $23,000 per barrel = $690,000. Needs a submarine and the Sonar Collections Dock | No |
| Submarine Pieces | 30 | Abigail's follow-up mission → Kraken submersible | No |
| Hidden Packages | 12 | $7,500–$25,000 each, and they respawn via character switching | No |
| Peyote Plants | 27 | Animal transformations. Enhanced and next-gen only — not on PS3 or Xbox 360 | No |
| Monkey Mosaics | 50 | Clothing for Trevor and the Go Go Monkey Blista | No |
| Epsilon Tracts | 10 | A link to the tract on the Epsilon website. That is all | No |
| Rampages | 5 | Trophy. Trevor only | No |
The three most useful corrections here
You do not need all 50 stunt jumps. 25 of 50, 25 of 50 and 8 of 15 are the actual requirements. The full sets only earn trophies.
Hidden Packages respawn. Collect one, switch character, switch back, collect it again. It is a documented repeatable money source and there are twelve of them, not fifteen and not a hundred.
The Go Go Monkey Blista is tied to returning-player status and is unobtainable for players who did not own the PS3 or Xbox 360 version — so fifty mosaics does not guarantee it.
One genuine source conflict worth naming: the total for nuclear waste. GTA Wiki's collectibles page says a “$250,000 bonus for collecting all”; GamesRadar documents $23,000 per barrel with no separate bonus, which comes to $690,000 across thirty. We have printed both rather than pick one.
Action Figures, Playing Cards and Movie Props are GTA Online collectibles, not single player. They appear in a lot of story-mode lists anyway.
Back to the GTA V guides hubThe map, region by region
Size: there is no official number
Rockstar has never published one. The most-cited community measurement is 75.84 km², rising to about 80.31 km² if you count all playable area. A separate measurement of 127 km² (49 sq mi) exists and counts open water. The numbers differ on what they include, not on the map. The pre-release “100 square miles” claim is not supported by any of them.
For scale against the rest of the series: GTA III 8.12 km², Vice City 9.11, GTA IV 16.14, San Andreas 38.2, GTA V 75.84. Los Santos is roughly a tenth the size of real Los Angeles and larger than San Francisco, Paris or central Tokyo.
| Region | Areas | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Los Santos — downtown | Legion Square, Mission Row, Pillbox Hill, Textile City | Missions, shops, the dense city driving |
| Los Santos — north | Vinewood, Rockford Hills, Richman, Morningwood, Pacific Bluffs | Money. Michael's world, the expensive property, the hill roads |
| Los Santos — west | Del Perro, La Puerta, Little Seoul, Vespucci Beach and Canals | Beach, coast, most of the leisure activities |
| Los Santos — east | Cypress Flats, El Burro Heights, La Mesa, Murrieta Heights | Industrial. Where a lot of the later missions happen |
| Los Santos — south | Davis, Chamberlain Hills, Strawberry, Rancho, LSIA, Port of Los Santos | Franklin's turf, the airport, the docks |
| Blaine County | Sandy Shores, Paleto Bay, Grapeseed, Harmony, Alamo Sea, Mount Chiliad, Fort Zancudo, Grand Senora Desert | Trevor's territory. Off-road, aviation, wilderness, and most of the collectibles |
Worth knowing: Fort Zancudo and Bolingbroke Penitentiary are restricted zones that generate an immediate wanted level, Mount Chiliad is where UFOs appear after 100% completion, and Thomson Scrapyard is where the Beast encounter happens at the end of the peyote chain.
Back to the GTA V guides hubClaims that keep circulating
- “The stock market exists in GTA Online.” It does not. Single player only, both exchanges
- “These percentages are guaranteed.” They vary by platform and release — Betta returns about 80% on old-gen and 21% on next-gen
- “Crash any company by destroying its vehicles.” Overstated. LCN's response to things like destroying delivery trucks is documented as inconsistent or negligible
- “Buy the dip on story-crashed stocks.” LifeInvader and Richards Majestic never recover their pre-crash values
- “The LCN graphs show you what is happening.” They can be wildly inaccurate against actual price movement
- “BAWSAQ is dead.” No source confirms permanent removal. It has been intermittently unavailable since 2013
- “You can get unlimited money.” $2,147,483,647 per character, and that is the integer limit rather than a design choice
- “100% gives you a special weapon or car.” It gives a trophy, a T-shirt, UFOs and the Bigfoot mission
- “You must collect everything for 100%.” Submarine pieces, nuclear waste, hidden packages, mosaics, peyotes, tracts and rampages are all optional
The map, the economy and GTA 6
The setting: Vice City, in the state of Leonida. That is the whole official geography. Rockstar has published no map figure — no area, no square-kilometre number, nothing in writing. The only official reference point is a verbal comparison from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson during hands-off press demos in August 2026: about three times Red Dead Redemption 2. That is a studio head talking to journalists, not a published specification. Rockstar's own written language stays qualitative: “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet”. Any specific square-kilometre figure you read for GTA 6 is invented.
Nothing has been documented about whether GTA 6 has a stock market, purchasable property, businesses or collectibles. Rockstar has published no written systems documentation, and the August 2026 gameplay presentation came with no feature breakdown. The only on-record commentary of any kind is Rob Nelson's, given verbally to press — and on the economy he said nothing beyond safehouses being more interactive than GTA V's.
What makes this section worth keeping rather than deleting: Los Santos and Blaine County are the yardstick people will actually use. When the first Leonida map comparisons appear in November, they will all be measured against the 75.84 km² figure on this page — a number Rockstar never published either.
