GTA Online Money Guide: What Actually Pays in 2026

A thirteen-year economy that was rewritten again in July 2026. Here is what every business really earns solo, what Cayo Perico pays after three nerfs, and why the best repeatable earner in the game right now is the one Rockstar forgot to change.

The answer, in one line

After Title Update 1.73 the best repeatable solo earner is Auto Shop Contracts at roughly $306,000–$500,000 an hour, because Rockstar left them out of the weekly decay. The first business a new player should own is the Acid Lab.

Cayo Perico is no longer the default answer, and the economy now rewards one run of each heist per week over grinding any single one. Money per hour → · Every business ranked →

Read this before you trust any payout figure, here or anywhere

Title Update 1.73, 14 July 2026, restructured the entire heist economy. Cayo Perico values were cut again, and repeat runs inside the same week now bias toward the cheapest target. Rockstar published no numbers for that cut, so every specific post-nerf figure in circulation — including ours — is community-derived. Any guide that does not say which patch its numbers come from should be treated as unverified. Ours are current as of TU 1.73.

Career Builder: the $4 million that is not $4 million

A one-time head start for a new character on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced. It launched with the Expanded & Enhanced release on 15 March 2022 and can be used once per account.

The part every beginner guide gets wrong

You do not receive $4,000,000. You receive $4,000,000 of spending power inside the Career Builder menu, and you may carry out a maximum of $1,000,000. Anything above that is forfeited. In practice you must spend at least $3M or lose the difference — so the question is not whether to spend it, but on what.

The four paths and what each leaves you owning on day one.

Nightclub OwnerNightclub10 nightclubs $1.08M–$1.7M · 9 interior upgrades · 19 vehicles (one free)The trap

Take Gunrunner. The Bunker is the only Career Builder property that produces stock with zero player input, its sell missions are fully solo-completable in 25-unit chunks, and it later feeds the Nightclub. A documented build: Chumash Bunker $1,650,000 + Upgrade Pack D $1,214,500 + a cheap vehicle + a few weapons ≈ $3,002,000 spent, leaving roughly $998,000 to carry in.

Nightclub Owner is the trap for exactly the reason in the caption above: the nightclub warehouse produces nothing until you own the feeder businesses, which is another $6 million of purchases away. A brand-new player who picks it gets the safe income and a large hole.

Two numbers we are giving you as ranges, and why

Nightclub full warehouse sale: $1,737,900 or $1,831,500 net, depending on whether Tony's 10% cut is capped at $100,000. The two figures are the same gross with a different fee assumption.
Cocaine Lockup hourly: $72,750 or ~$105,000 across three sources. Both are defensible; the spread is upgrade level and sell timing.

The sell-mission rule nobody tells new players

For MC businesses the number of delivery vehicles scales with the value of your stock. Under $210,000 spawns one vehicle. $210K–$315K spawns two. Above $315K spawns three or more, which is effectively impossible alone inside the thirty-minute timer. Sell small and sell often. The Bunker works the opposite way — no bulk bonus exists, so four 25-unit sales pay exactly the same as one 100-unit sale and carry a quarter of the risk.

The first ten hours, in order

Everything a new solo player needs from this page is above, but scattered across two sections. This is the same information as a sequence. Figures are TU 1.73.

What not to buy in the first ten hours

The Nightclub. It produces almost nothing until roughly $6M of feeder businesses are already running. It is a late purchase that looks like an early one, which is exactly why Career Builder's Nightclub Owner path is the trap.
The Arcade, as an earner. $5,000 per in-game day with all 35 machines — under $6,300 an hour. Buy it when you want the Casino Heist, not before.
The Mansion. $11,500,000 and no passive income at all.

The habit worth building from day one

Check the Thursday rotation before a session, not after. And compare hourly rates, not multiplier sizes — a 4× on a slow mission can pay less per hour than a 2× on a fast one. Section 05 covers both weekly systems.

Cayo Perico after three nerfs

For three years Cayo Perico was the answer to every money question in GTA Online. It is not any more, and the numbers still circulating are mostly from before the cuts.

Cooldown and the scoping order

  • Solo cooldown: 3 in-game days = 144 real minutes. In a group it is 1 in-game day = 48 minutes. That gap is deliberate and dates from July 2022
  • Scope in this order during Gather Intel: primary target → infiltration points → escape points → compound entrances → equipment and secondary loot
  • Photograph each loot table separately. Adjacent tables shot in one frame register as one
  • Loot type and amount at each position re-rolls between runs — scoping is not a one-time job
  • Outside the compound you find cash, weed and cocaine. Inside: cash, gold and paintings

The three nerfs, dated

  • 26 July 2022 — The Criminal Enterprises. Solo cooldown raised to 144 minutes. This is what killed back-to-back solo farming
  • 28 September 2023 — primary targets cut a flat 30% (Pink Diamond and Madrazo Files excepted), secondaries cut 10% (gold excepted). Average solo take fell from ~$1.5M to ~$1.1M
  • 14 July 2026 — TU 1.73 cut values again, roughly 15–25%, and moved repeat-run target appearance rates to a weekly cadence. One source reports about 80% of repeat runs now landing on the $400,000 Tequila

Realistic solo total today, including secondaries: $800,000 to $1,500,000 per cycle, against the $1M+ that used to be close to guaranteed.

How the meta actually changed in July 2026

The economy moved from “grind one optimal activity repeatedly” to “complete a wide rotation of heists once each per week”. That single sentence is the most useful thing on this page. Cayo Perico is no longer the default answer, and Auto Shop Contracts became the best repeatable solo earner purely by being left out of the decay change.

Running underneath all of it is a passive layer that stacks with everything: the Nightclub safe at roughly $62,500/hr up to a $250,000 cap, warehouse accrual around $50,500/hr with all feeders running, the Acid Lab at about $100,000/hr, the Agency safe at up to $20,000 per in-game day, and the Salvage Yard safe at up to $24,000 per 48 minutes. None of it requires you to be doing anything in particular.

The weekly reset that now runs the economy

There are now two separate weekly systems, and confusing them is the most common planning mistake in 2026. Both reset on Thursday, at roughly 06:00 BST.

The two weekly layers.
SystemWhat it doesApplies to
Bonus rotation2×, 3× or occasionally 4× GTA$ on selected activities, plus 30–50% discounts, a prize vehicle and a podium carA different, announced set of modes every week
Weekly first completion new, TU 1.73Raised payout the first time the host completes a given finale that weekAbout 13 contact missions and heists, every week regardless of the rotation

The trap with the bonus rotation is treating the multiplier as the whole story. A 4× on a slow mission can pay less per hour than a 2× on a fast one. Compare hourly rates, not multiplier sizes.

Is GTA+ worth it?

$7.99 a month. It includes GTA$500,000 deposited automatically each billing cycle, a free monthly vehicle claim, 100 personal vehicle slots, free CEO/VIP registration, Shark Cards with 15% extra GTA$, and a rotating games library.

The concrete money-making argument is narrower than the marketing: the Acid Lab installation ($750,000) is free for members, which alone exceeds about eight months of subscription cost in a single claim. Note that $750,000 is the installation only — getting the business running costs roughly $1,000,000 all in, and GTA+ covers the larger half of that.

Our honest read

On pure in-game maths the $500,000 monthly stipend dwarfs the $7.99, so it looks like an obvious yes. But an active player earns $500,000 in well under an hour of Auto Shop contracts — so for them GTA+ buys time, not money. It is genuinely best value for a new player, who gets the free Acid Lab and free CEO registration at exactly the point those matter most. It is a recurring real-money subscription either way, and that is the part worth deciding deliberately.

What the rest of the internet still tells you

A night firefight in GTA Online with muzzle flashes and motorcycles
Public-lobby sell missions pay a High Demand bonus and cost you the cargo if it goes wrong. Official Rockstar screenshot.
  • “Cayo pays $1.5M solo.” True before September 2023. Pre-2023 target values — Tequila $900,000, Necklace $1,000,000, Bonds $1,100,000, Pink Diamond $1,300,000 — still appear in a huge number of guides. Current values are in section 03
  • “Payphone hits pay $45,000.” Rockstar briefly cut them, then reverted the change because of a technical issue. The current figure is $85,000 for the leader. Multiple large sites still publish the nerfed number
  • “Sell the full bunker for a bonus.” There is no per-unit bonus. Four 25-unit sales pay identically to one 100-unit sale
  • “Buy a nightclub first, it is passive income.” It produces nothing without roughly $6M of feeder businesses already running
  • “The arcade is a money-maker.” It caps at $5,000 per in-game day with all 35 machines — under $6,300 an hour
  • “You can solo the Casino Heist.” Every prep, yes. The finale, no — the vault door is a two-person interaction
  • “Career Builder gives you $4 million.” See section 01

Money glitches

A whole ecosystem of sites publishes “working 2026 money glitches”. Rockstar's documented position: it runs routine sweeps for illegitimately gained GTA$, and the penalty ladder is “cash balance adjustments, character resets, suspensions and up to permanent bans”. In September 2020 this meant full account wipes, including seven-year-old accounts — money from Shark Card purchases preserved, everything else removed. The sites publishing these are also a common vector for modded-account sales and account theft.

What happens to GTA Online when GTA 6 lands

Confirmed, and it is not much

Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick, February 2026: “I have every reason to believe we'll continue to support GTA Online. There's a great community that loves it, that stays engaged.” He repeated the position later in 2026. That is the entire official record — a CEO's answer on an earnings call, not a Rockstar roadmap.

Two facts make that more meaningful than it sounds. GTA 6 is officially described as “a single-player experience” — Rockstar has never announced an online mode for it, not its existence, name, format or timing. And GTA 6 launches on consoles only, with no PC version announced. On PC, GTA Online is not competing with anything in November.

Rockstar is also actively marketing the two together: digital GTA 6 pre-orders include a free month of GTA+, described as the best way to get the most out of GTA Online. Companies do not bundle a subscription to a product they are about to retire.

09Common questions

What is the fastest way to make money in GTA Online solo?
For a repeatable grind, Auto Shop Contracts at roughly $306,000–$500,000 an hour — they were left out of the TU 1.73 weekly decay, so they do not lose value on repeat runs. For raw hourly, first-weekly completions of the Kortz Center Heist pay more but collapse to about $400,000 on repeats.
Does Career Builder really give you $4 million?
No. You get $4,000,000 of spending power inside the Career Builder menu and may carry out a maximum of $1,000,000. Anything unspent above that is forfeited.
Is Cayo Perico still worth doing?
Yes, but it is no longer the default answer. After cuts in 2022, 2023 and July 2026 a realistic solo cycle is $800,000–$1,500,000, the solo cooldown is 144 minutes, and repeat runs inside the same week bias heavily toward the $400,000 Tequila.
Which business should a new player buy first?
The Acid Lab. The $750,000 installation is free on GTA+, and it costs about $1,000,000 all in otherwise — has no bills, no staff wages and no raids, sells solo in short missions, and earns roughly $100,000 an hour semi-passively.
Can you solo the Diamond Casino Heist?
All the preps and setups, yes. The finale, no — the vault door is a mechanical two-person interaction. Guides claiming a full solo Casino Heist are wrong.
Will GTA Online keep running after GTA 6?
Take-Two has said it expects to continue supporting it, most recently in 2026. That is a CEO statement on an earnings call rather than a published roadmap. GTA 6 itself is officially described as a single-player experience, with no online mode announced.
