How to read this page
Entries are dated and attributed to whoever actually said the thing. Where an item is an analyst estimate or a third-party claim rather than a Rockstar or Take-Two statement, it says so in the row. Take-Two has disclosed no pre-order numbers at all — every sales figure you have seen is somebody’s model.
The last three weeks
| Date | What happened | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| 27 Aug | An Extended Look premieres on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET, then on YouTube six hours later. ~26:49 of in-game footage | Rockstar |
| ~28 Aug | Rockstar quietly posts a 14.2 GB, ~70 Mbps 4K version — visibly better than the YouTube upload | Rockstar |
| 31 Aug | Extended Look is Netflix’s most-watched title globally: 31.1M views in four days, against 23.2M for second place | Netflix data |
| 31 Aug | Third-party analytics claim ~4.77M pre-orders, ~90% Ultimate Edition, ~$500M revenue | Estimate, not official |
| 1 Sep | Rob Nelson: the game is now so large that no single person on the team knows all of it. Character-switching detail (sprint on L3) surfaces in the same press round | Rockstar, to press |
| 2 Sep | Rockstar’s own YouTube upload passes 17 million views | Platform data |
| 3 Sep | Sony reveals two limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers — black and white, “VI” numeral, hot pink buttons, embossed palm fronds. $85, releasing 19 November | Sony, not Rockstar |
| 3 Sep | Digital Foundry analysis: a major leap over GTA V, with noted PS5 trade-offs in reflections | Press analysis |
| 4 Sep | UK hardware sales after the reveal: PS5 +33%, Xbox +34% | Retail data |
| 8 Sep | Rockstar elaborates on how the Jason–Lucia relationship affects the story. Regional local-time unlock schedule reported — New Zealand first, 18 November | Rockstar, to press |
| 10 Sep | DualSense pre-orders open, 10 a.m. ET. The black version is exclusive to PlayStation Direct | Sony |
| 10 Sep | Employment tribunal opens in Edinburgh over 31 dismissed Rockstar staff. Rockstar rejects the IWGB’s unlawful-dismissal claims, maintaining the firings were over leaking specific game features | Court proceedings |
| 10 Sep | Miami Beach Commission approves a multi-million-dollar GTA 6 advertising deal, 4–3 | Public record |
| ~11 Sep | An “online 32 player format” surfaces in the tribunal filing. Rockstar calls game features “the most closely guarded secrets of the company” | Not an announcement |
| 11 Sep | Piper Sandler raises its launch forecast to ~48M copies | Analyst projection |
| 14 Sep | Stephen Root confirms to the Associated Press that he voices Brian Heder — “Yeeaahhh, you’re gonna see me in that.” The only voice-cast information that exists | The actor, not Rockstar |
No new Rockstar Newswire post about GTA 6 has appeared since the Extended Look ones. That is why three rows above are marked Rockstar, to press rather than Rockstar: everything the company has added since 27 August was said out loud to journalists at hands-off demos, by one person, and never published in writing. The pattern for the last three weeks is: Rockstar publishes almost nothing, and everyone else fills the space.
The pre-order numbers nobody actually has
Take-Two has disclosed nothing
Strauss Zelnick called pre-orders “unprecedented” and “astonishing” on the 7 August earnings call — “no one’s ever seen before at Take-Two or in the industry”. He gave no figures, and added “we are realistic and, at best, cautiously optimistic” and “we’re allergic to victory laps.”
Every number in circulation — 4.77 million pre-orders, $400M, $500M, 39 million, $3 billion, 37–51 million week one, 48 million — comes from Newzoo, Piper Sandler, Alinea or similar. Newzoo itself pushed back on the inflation: “Contrary to social media reports, GTA 6 has not done a billion dollars in pre-orders 21 weeks out.”
On price, Zelnick’s line was: “Grand Theft Auto VI will be an incredible bargain as experiences go.”
The Edinburgh tribunal, and the “32 players” story
An employment tribunal opened in Edinburgh on 10 September 2026 over the dismissal of 31 Rockstar staff. The IWGB union claims unlawful dismissal over union activity; Rockstar maintains the firings were for leaking specific game features in a private Discord, and has said the union “have no idea who was in this Discord”.
How a filing became a feature announcement
A phrase describing an “online 32 player format” appeared in the tribunal filing — as part of describing what dismissed employees allegedly discussed privately. Within a day it was being reported as a GTA 6 feature.
It confirms nothing. Not that an online mode exists, not that it ships at launch, not a player cap. Rockstar’s only response was to call game features “the most closely guarded secrets of the company” — which is a statement about secrecy, not a confirmation. The official product description remains “a single-player experience”.
What to actually watch for before November
- A Newswire post, not a report. Rockstar announces through its own Newswire and its own site. Anything meaningful will appear there first
- The pre-load date, 12 November. The same day physical copies arrive with a download code
- Any PC acknowledgement whatsoever. There has been none. A single sentence would be the biggest GTA news of the year
- The word “online” from Rockstar. Still never used about GTA 6
- The November retrial of the 2022 leaker, reported by the BBC but not confirmed by any court statement
And one thing not to watch for: a third delay. Take-Two has reaffirmed 19 November at least three times in 2026, most pointedly in May — “I think reiterating November 19 as a launch day today is probably a positive.”
