GTA 5 Vehicles: The Fastest Cars on Tested Figures
Eight hundred and three vehicles, and a set of in-game stat bars that describe none of them accurately. Here is what the measured data says instead — by top speed and by lap time, which give different winners — plus which upgrades change anything at all.

The answer, in one line
Fastest without HSW: Grotti Cartuccia GT, 139.00 mph. With Hao's Special Works — PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced only — Bravado Banshee GTS, 172.50 mph.
Fastest lap of any ground vehicle is the Benefactor BR8 at 0:54.555, and it tops out at 121 mph. The Ocelot Pariah, still cited everywhere as first, is sixth. The rankings → · Why the stat bars are wrong →
Why the in-game stat bars are wrong
This is the single most useful thing on this page, so it goes first. The speed, acceleration, braking and traction bars in GTA V do not describe how a vehicle performs. Two cars can show an identical speed bar and differ by twenty miles per hour in reality, and a car with a shorter bar can be genuinely faster.
The mechanism, not just the complaint
The Speed bar is drawn from a handling value called fInitialDriveMaxFlatVel — documented as the top speed of the engine “without external factors, including drag, hills, bumps, or the engine power itself”. It is a theoretical gearing ceiling, effectively the final drive ratio. Cars essentially never reach it. What actually caps real top speed is engine force interacting with aerodynamic drag, gear ratios, suspension and road surface — none of which appears on the bar.
The in-game speedometer is not reliable either. Broughy1322, whose testing is the community standard, notes that non-digital in-game speedometers “either don't work or at the very least are inaccurate”. GTABase's position is the same: the published tested figures are the correct ones.
What the community uses instead
| Metric | Method |
|---|---|
| Top speed | Fully upgraded, flat straight road, exactly 0.2 miles between checkpoints, five runs, frame-by-frame video analysis to 1/59.94th of a second, averaged and rounded to the nearest 0.25 mph. That rounding is why every published figure ends in .00, .25, .50 or .75 |
| Lap time | All relevant mods fitted, balanced baseline setup, same driver and track, roughly ten laps, best time taken. Deliberately excludes kerb boosting and brake boosting. Run on Enhanced, where frame rate does not affect performance |
The two metrics produce different winners, and that is the point. The fastest lap time in the game belongs to the Benefactor BR8 at 0:54.555 — a car that tops out at only 121 mph, slower in a straight line than roughly twenty-five other vehicles. Lap time rewards acceleration, braking and cornering. Top speed rewards none of them.
A sourcing warning that matters more than usual
While checking figures for this page we found one large site publishing top speeds roughly 40 mph too high — a car listed at 155.50 mph tests at 116.27 mph. We cross-checked every number below against Broughy's own database. If a figure you read elsewhere does not end in .00, .25, .50 or .75, it did not come from the tested data.
The fastest vehicles, on tested figures
| # | Vehicle | Class | Top speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Grotti Cartuccia GT | Sports | 139.00 mph / 223.70 km/h |
| 2 | Grotti Veleno GT | Super | 138.75 / 223.30 |
| 3 | Bravado Banshee GTS | Sports | 138.00 / 222.09 |
| 4 | BF Weevil Custom | Muscle | 137.50 / 221.28 |
| 5 | Progen Luiva | Super | 136.25 / 219.27 |
| 6 | Ocelot Pariah | Sports | 136.00 / 218.87 |
| 7 | Grotti Itali RSX | Sports | 134.50 / 216.46 |
| 8 | Vapid FMJ MK V | Super | 133.50 / 214.85 |
Note the Pariah at sixth. For years it was the answer to “fastest car in GTA Online”, and a large amount of still-published content says so. It is no longer first, and at $1,420,000 it remains one of the best value-to-speed buys in the game — which is a better reason to own it than a title it lost.
With HSW, the answer changes entirely
Hao's Special Works upgrades are PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced only. On those platforms the ranking is not close:
- Bravado Banshee GTS — 172.50 mph / 277.61 km/h
- Grotti Stinger TT — 168.50 / 271.17
- Declasse Tampa GT — 166.00 / 267.15
- Grotti Veleno GT — 164.00 / 263.93
Thirty vehicles are HSW-compatible. Any list that mixes HSW and non-HSW figures without labelling them is misleading: “the fastest car in GTA Online” is the Cartuccia GT at 139 mph, or the Banshee GTS at 172.5 mph, and which one depends entirely on your platform.
Fastest by lap time, which is a different list
| Class | Vehicle | Lap time | Top speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall, ground | Benefactor BR8 | 0:54.555 | 121.00 mph |
| Sports | Grotti Itali GTO | 0:59.359 | 128.00 |
| Muscle | Vapid Dominator GT | 1:02.880 | 123.00 |
| Motorcycles race-legal | Western Powersurge | 0:55.371 | 130.00 |
| Off-Road | Declasse Draugur | 1:02.095 | 111.75 |
| Planes | Mammoth F-160 Raiju | 0:30.822 | 232.50 |
| Boats | Shitzu Longfin | 1:22.550 | 122.00 |
Both Oppressors lap faster than the Powersurge but are barred from standard races, which is why the race-legal leader is listed instead. Among aircraft, the Buckingham Pyro is faster in a straight line than the Alpha-Z1 and the Howard NX-25 and laps slower than both — the clearest single illustration of why one number is not enough.
Back to the GTA V guides hubWhat to actually buy
The best performance-per-dollar vehicle in the game, by a distance
Shitzu Bati 801 — $15,000. Tested 135.00 mph, lap time 0:58.625. That is sixth on lap time and fifth on top speed among the motorcycles with tested figures, and the lap time beats every Sports car in the game except the top three — from a bike costing one hundred and thirtieth of what a BR8 costs.
| Price | Vehicle | Why |
|---|---|---|
| $15,000 | Shitzu Bati 801 | See above. Nothing else in the game is close on value |
| $62,000 | Imponte Dukes | Cheap Muscle entry, 112.75 mph. Free for players returning from PS3/360 |
| $665,000 | Duke O'Death | Survives roughly nine homing missiles or three RPG hits — more explosive-resistant than the Kuruma. In story mode it is $279,000 after the Duel random event |
| $698,250 | Armored Kuruma | Bulletproof; only explosives destroy it. The standard solo-mission recommendation |
| $1,420,000 | Ocelot Pariah | Sixth fastest in the game, far cheaper than the Supers around it |
| $1,880,000–$1,965,000 | Übermacht Niobe · Grotti Itali GTO | The genuine race meta in Sports, cheaper than most Supers that lap slower |
For a new player the Kuruma or the Duke O'Death matters more than any lap time on this page. They change which missions you can finish alone, and that is worth more early than two tenths of a second.
What to buy at your actual budget
The same list sorted by the question people actually ask, which is not “what is fastest” but “I have this much, what now”. GTA Online prices.
| You have | Buy | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| Under $100K | Shitzu Bati 801 — $15,000. 135.00 mph, 0:58.625 lap. Nothing in the game is close on value | Every cheap car. The bike outruns all of them and costs less |
| ~$700K | Armored Kuruma — $698,250. Bulletproof; only explosives kill it. The standard solo-mission answer | Anything bought for speed. At this budget survivability decides which content you can run alone |
| ~$1.5M | Ocelot Pariah — $1,420,000. Sixth fastest in the game, far cheaper than the Supers around it | Supers in this tier. You are paying for a badge, not a lap time |
| ~$2M | Übermacht Niobe or Grotti Itali GTO — $1,880,000–$1,965,000. The genuine race meta in Sports | Top-speed shopping. If you race, lap time is the only number that pays |
| On HSW platforms | Bravado Banshee GTS. 172.50 mph with Hao's Special Works — 33.5 mph clear of anything without it | HSW shopping on PS4, Xbox One or PC Legacy. The upgrades do not exist there |
The order that matters more than any of this
Survivability before speed, and a cheap bike before either. A new player who buys the Bati 801 and the Kuruma for $713,250 total can run more content alone than one who spent $1,420,000 on the Pariah — and will earn the Pariah faster because of it.
Which upgrades do something, and which do not
| Upgrade | Effect | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | Increases engine power — better acceleration and top speed | Always |
| Turbo | Increases engine power; acceleration and top speed | Always |
| Transmission | Each level adds a gear and shortens shift delay — primarily acceleration | Always |
| Brakes | Stopping force only. No effect on speed or acceleration | Usually — a few older cars lock up at max |
| Spoiler | Cornering grip. Only non-stock spoiler options give it — keeping the stock spoiler gives nothing | If you pick a real one |
| Suspension | Generally does not affect speed. Helps traction only on 2019-and-later cars with the relevant handling flags | Situational |
| Armour | Zero effect on speed or handling. Reduces damage taken, nothing else | Survival only |
| Paint · wheels · liveries · interior · horns · lights | Nothing | Cosmetic |
The whole thing in one line
Top speed ← engine + turbo. Acceleration ← engine + turbo + transmission. Cornering ← a non-stock spoiler, plus suspension on newer cars only. Braking ← brakes. Survivability ← armour, and nothing else.
“Does armour slow the car down?” is the most common question here and the answer is no — it has zero impact on performance either way. The only indirect benefit is that an undamaged car does not suffer the slowdown a damaged one does.
Back to the GTA V guides hubSpecial vehicles in story mode, and which you can keep
| Vehicle | How you get it | Keepable? |
|---|---|---|
| Michael's Obey Tailgater | Owned from the start, plate 5MDS003 | Yes — respawns at his house if abandoned |
| Franklin's Buffalo S | Owned from the start, plate FC1988 | Yes — respawns at his house |
| Trevor's Canis Bodhi | Available after Mr. Philips, plate BETTY 32 | Until it is destroyed in a later scripted mission |
| Space Docker | All 50 Spaceship Parts, then The Final Frontier with Omega | Yes, and transferable between protagonists |
| Duke O'Death | Complete the Duel random event, then buy it for $279,000 from the in-game internet. The GTA Online price is $665,000 | Yes |
| Kraken submersible | Wildlife Photography Challenge, then $1,325,000 | No — Pegasus vehicle, no garage, no customisation |
| Dodo seaplane | Sea Plane random event, then $500,000 | No — Pegasus aircraft, respray only |
| Truffade Z-Type | $10,000,000 from the in-game internet | Yes. Note it is $950,000 in GTA Online — the biggest price gap in the game |
| Epsilon Program vehicles | Epsilon questline — Tailgater, Sentinel XS, Landstalker, Bison | Yes |
| Snow-covered Prologue variants | Prologue and Bury the Hatchet | No — mission only |
Garage capacity, and the claim that is wrong everywhere
Each protagonist's garage holds two vehicles. Michael's De Santa residence, Trevor's trailer and Franklin's 3671 Whispymound Drive are all documented at two. The widely repeated claim that Franklin's Vinewood house stores six does not hold up in any source we could find.
A stored car goes to the impound if you trigger a mission needing a different vehicle, park outside a police station, wander far enough for it to despawn, or load an autosave that puts you back at a safehouse. Recovery is $250. The three protagonists' personal vehicles are exempt — abandon one and it respawns at their house rather than being impounded.
100% completion gives you no vehicle
GTA V is one of only two games in the series that awards no weapon or vehicle for 100% completion. You get the trophy, a T-shirt, UFO spawns and the Bigfoot mission. Any page promising a car for finishing the checklist is wrong.
Claims to stop repeating
- Any ranking built on the stat bars. Wrong by construction — see section 01
- “The Pariah is the fastest car.” It was for years. It is sixth
- “Fastest” without saying which metric. The fastest lap of any ground vehicle belongs to a 121 mph car
- HSW figures quoted without the platform caveat. It moves the top number from 139 to 172.5 mph and is unavailable on PS4, Xbox One and PC Legacy
- “Armour slows you down” or “armour improves handling.” Neither. Zero effect on performance
- “Suspension upgrades improve speed.” No — and they only help traction on 2019-and-later cars
- “A spoiler always adds grip.” Only non-stock spoilers do
- “100% unlocks a special car.” It does not
- “Franklin's house holds six cars.” Two, like the others
One structural fact behind a lot of outdated content: single-player stopped receiving new vehicles after the Ill-Gotten Gains Part 2 update on 8 July 2015. Everything added since is GTA Online only. A list that mixes the two without saying so is describing a garage you cannot build.
Back to the GTA V guides hubVehicles and GTA 6
No vehicle in GTA 6 has been officially detailed. Not a count, not a class list, not a single named car, not the customisation system. Rockstar has published no written systems documentation. The 27-minute gameplay presentation in August 2026 showed vehicles being driven; it did not document how any of it works.
The one exception, and it is a thin one: Rob Nelson told press that driving is “slightly more challenging” and needs “a bit of skill” — narrower streets, denser traffic — and that real racing drivers were consulted. A fuel gauge, refuelling at stations, a timed Slim Jim minigame for older cars and a key cloner for modern ones were all seen in the footage. None of that is a spec sheet, and none of it is a performance figure.
What is defensible: GTA 6 returns to Vice City, in the state of Leonida, with an entirely new roster, and it launches 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The tested figures on this page are the baseline every new car will be measured against, because the methodology — 0.2 miles, five runs, frame-by-frame — will simply be pointed at the new game.
The one thing we will predict, because it has happened at every launch: the first wave of “fastest car in GTA 6” articles will be built on stat bars, and they will be wrong for exactly the reasons in section 01.
